To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to others is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken,
because the greatest hazard in life is to do nothing.

The person who risks nothing,
does nothing, has nothing, and is nothing.

They may avoid suffering and sorrow,
but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.

Chained by their attitudes, they are a slave,
they forfeited their freedom.

Only the person who risks can be free.

Dear Universe II

Dear Universe,
When we have ceased to exist,
we don’t want anyone to miss us
or shed even a single tear for us.
If anyone wants to keep us in his memory,
let him do so in joy.
For, you see,
we did the only right thing.
We lived.

-Ernst Erich Noth | Die Mietskaserne

Dear Universe

Dear Universe…
a tiny piece of the whole will die;
Don’t be upset,
you will barely feel the loss
of one cell being extinguished.
Time rolls on.
What is such a little life?
A brief flicker in the world,
then merely ashes and dust.

-Ernst Erich Noth | Die Mietskaserne

Joyce Cary – Ireland – fragment from ‘To Be a Pilgrim’ (1942).

“To love”

I didn’t ask you to stay,
but you stayed.
I never asked you
who you where?
or what you wanted?,
You were simply there.

What do you want from me?
Was I not stronger alone?
And did I ever need you?
…but stay a bit longer…

Not long…
just until they start asking
how I am
and I stop saying: “Fine”.

Everyone can tell at a glance:
You are here.
If you ever leave me…
I will go with you.
